Sociale agenda

29 November 2008 | Noorwegen, Kristiansand
Social activity
Norway knows two period of huge social activity. The month of July is about holiday and meeting friends and family. Especially the long evenings make this period special. The Norwegians look forward to the summer because of the nice weather. However, the social aspect is just as important. You also see this back in the advertising brochures.
The other social period is the month before Christmas. From half November the Christmas lunches and dinners start. Every company, department, group of friends, and family organize one. Apart from this shopping has priority, just like rest in Europe. Many take the boat up and down to Denmark for a few hours of shopping. It is cheaper, but on other hand there is a better choice in merchandise. The Danish are known for their great design. There are many Christmas traditions (most of which we are discovering now). Advent is being celebrated here; everywhere you see advent calendars. Tomorrow, at first day of advent the big Christmas tree is decorated and lit together with all other decorations in the city. Many actually come to town to see and celebrate.
We are still busy with St Nicolaas, especially since Lars and Floor got their own costumes. The Christmas tree will have to wait till next weekend. Besides, our social calendar is quite busy with “Lysloype” (later more) and talent show at Lars’ school, and Christmas party and “Luciatog” at Floor’s school. Lucia is symbol of light in the dark days of December.
