Noorse gewoontes

Je kan het snel zien als iemand al lang in Noorwegen woont. Hij draagt sandalen met sokken, hij weet precies de dag waarop de uitverkoop begint en winkelt die dag tezamen met alle Noren in alle drukte, hij zegt geen sorry als hij tegen iemand aanbotst, hij verwacht dat de persoon voor hem de deur voor hem laat dicht vallen, hij doet overal ketchup op, zeker op zijn pizza, zijn feestmaal is knakworstjes,pizza of garnalen, hij verblijft met plezier in een klein hutje zonder water en elektriciteit ver weg van de bewoonde wereld, en tijdens een wandeling neemt hij twee thermosflessen mee: een gevuld met je koffie en uit de ander laat hij knakworsten glijden, die in koude aardappel pannekoek gerold dienen als lunch. (Geloof me, knakworsten die uit een thermos glijden is een erg onsmakelijk gezicht.)

De toekomst zal uitwijzen of we ooit deze en andere Noorse gewoontes overnemen. Wel trekken wij altijd onze schoenen uit als we een huis binnengaan, genieten we van typische Noorse (streek) gerechten, hebben onze moestuin en maken zelf jam, en hebben het motto geadopteerd: er bestaat geen slecht weer, alleen slechte kleding. Daarnaast, hebben we net besloten op zoek te gaan naar een hytte. Het lijkt ons heerlijk om in de weekenden en vakanties midden in de bossen te zitten in alle rust. In de winter willen we dan de langlaufskis onder kunnen binden bij de voordeur. Onze zoektocht is net begonnen: comfortabele hut dichtbij Kristiansand, in sneeuw gebied, met wc binnen ipv primitief buiten, en liefst met electricitiet of water.

Een hele nieuwe wereld gaat voor ons open: er bestaat een hele hytte industrie. Zo is behoefte aan electriciteit te ondervangen met zonnepanelen en door gebruik van gasflessen voor koken en koelkast. Warm stoken gaat zowiezo met houtkachel. Water haalt men ’s zomers normaal uit een nabij beekje of put en ’s winters door sneeuw te smelten op houtkachel. Een goedwerkend alternatief is opvangen van regenwater. Alleen drinkwater hoef je dan nog te verzorgen. Het is dus ook goed om in de gaten te houden, hoe dichtbij je de auto kunt parkeren en of de sneeuw in de winter wordt weggehaald totaan je hytte. Er zijn hytte douches met voetpompen en verschillende types toilets. De details hoe zo’n droog / compost toilet werkt zal ik hier achterwege laten. We houden jullie op de hoogte waar onze zoektocht eindigt. Jullie zijn natuurlijk van harte welkom in onze toekomstige hytte net als in Kristiansand.

Norwegian habits

It is easy to spot when someone has been a long time in Norway. He will wear sandals with socks, he knows which day the sale starts and will go shopping together with all Norwegian on that day in all the mayhem, he does not apologize when he bumps into someone, he is always prepared to catch the closing door when following closely behind somebody, he will put ketchup on all his food especially his pizza, his party dish is either sausages, pizza or shrimps, he loves to stay in a small cabin without running water and electricity in the middle of nowhere, and when going for a walk in the woods, he takes two thermos flasks: one for coffee and the other he will hold up side down to let sausages slide out, to be eaten wrapped in a cold pancake for lunch. (Trust me, sausages coming out of a thermos does not help your appetite.)

Future can only tell whether we will adopt the above and other Norwegian habits. We do take of our shoes when we go inside a house, we enjoy the typical Norwegian dishes, we do have our vegetable garden en make jelly ourselves, and we adopted the phrase: there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. Moreover, we have decided to go and look for a small cabin. It seems lovely to spend weekends and holidays in the woods in all quietness. In the winter we like to put on our cross country skis at the door step. At the moment, we just started our search for a comfortable cabin close by yet with enough snow, toilet inside (rather in outside), and preferably with either running water or electricity.

We just discovered a whole industry exists around the cabins (hytte in Norwegian). Instead of being hooked up to the main grid, solar panels provide enough electricity, when stove and fridge run on gas. Heating the cabin is done using wood. In the summer water is taken from a nearby stream of a common well, in winter time snow is melted next to the fire place. A good alternative is collecting the rainwater. You only have to bring your drinking water. It is thus important to realize how close you can park to your cabin and if the snow is being removed in wintertime all the way to your cabin. There are cabin showers with foot pumps and different toilet. I will not go into detail how such a dry/bio toilet works. We will keep you posted on our search.
